Life Begins and Ends with Girlfriends
by Judith B. Van Ginkel, Ph.D. and Betsy Kyte Newman

“The quintessential girlfriend gift with the bonding power of a page turner from Oprah’s Book Club.” - Amy Powell, Cincinnati Enquirer

Girlfriendships are incredibly important to women at all ages.  It is often through these girlfriendships that women define themselves.  Each woman has private joys and sorrows, and often commitments to family and male friends or spouses, but through their girlfriendships women become linked together in special ways that enrich their lives with extraordinary sweetness.  Not always easy.   Not always perfect.  Not even always good.  Usually not everlasting.  But always important.

The book, Life Begins and Ends with Girlfriends, is written in an engaging personal style.  While other books have analyzed women’s friendships, none has examined the changing bond over a lifetime, using interview responses and the current cultural milieu. Millions of women are intrigued by the subject of girlfriendship.

Girls and women have read the book and sent us their comments. It is clear that this little, quite personal volume has evoked memories long buried. A friend hosted a party last week for about 50 of our friends to launch the book. As the evening progressed and the guests began to discuss the meaning of the book, it became clear that with this little, quite personal, volume we have evoked emotions often long buried. Women told us that they cried when they read the stories, that they were impelled to call an old friend, resurrect a relationship, make an overture. So, in a real way, this book that is ours can provide a door through which other women can walk---a way to create their own books remembering their own stories, learning from the past and going forward.

In addition to reading the book for personal insight, the book makes a wonderful gift for friends and family and can serve as an effective and well-received resource for conferences on women’s issues or an intriguing guide for book club discussions.Meet_Judy.htmlhttp://www.cetconnect.org/MediaPlayer.aspx?vid=2068shapeimage_1_link_0
